Machine Vision of Clustering Identical Parts in Cellular Manufacturing

Prabhu M and Ramesh Kumar K

Business process Re-Engineering (BPR) involves the Radical Redesigning complex and dynamic processes in Research and development (R&D) organizations with multi-layer projects is a difficult task. Previous researchers have proposed many perceptive approaches for BPR utilizing intuition and subjective judgment from “experts” at various stages of their implementation. The proposed method facilitates the reorganization of R&D processes to automate assembly lines; we have tested and evaluated various methods on part discrimination for a model conveyer line. An advanced method is developed on tracking and picking up a specified part among a variety of parts on a moving conveyer. The method consists of a part shape discrimination analysis following the image processing of CCD camera shots for on-conveyer parts retrieving stored images from a collection by comparing features automatically extracted from the images themselves. The common features used are mathematical measures of colour, texture or shape; hence virtually all current CBIR systems.

Designing and Installation of Low-cost Optimized Wind Monitoring System

Saurav Gupta* and Gagandeep Kaur

Measurement of wind parameters is a necessity for chemicals industry. A big disaster can be prevented from happening if accurate wind monitoring system is installed in the industry. It is not easy to buy and install a wind monitoring system for every chemical industry from a vendor since its price is high and design varies from company to company and process to process. To make life easier, better and safer, a low cost optimized wind monitoring system has been designed and installed here with available resources. This project will help in measuring wind speed, wind direction and ambient air temperature to take protective measure right before the havoc, so that it can be prevented.

Customer-Defined Quality and Quality-Based Product Portfolio A Theoretical Framework on Quality

Xia Pan

Most of the studies on quality to date are viewpoints from management, while the economics on quality were often ignored. In this paper, we emphasize that the principle of utility is the key to understand customer-defined quality. Based on the reviews and discussions on fundamental, economic perspectives on quality, especially the references of Taguchi’s loss function and financial portfolio theory, we propose a preliminary theory and analytical framework on quality-based product portfolio.

Effect of Biofield Treatment on the Physical and Thermal Characteristics of Aluminium Powders

Mahendra Kumar Trivedi, Shrikant Patil* and Rama Mohan R Tallapragada

Aluminium powders are used in a wide range from propelling rockets to improving personal hygiene. More popular industrial applications include manufacture of silver metallic pigments, paints, inks, plastics, packaging, textiles and aerospace industry. As thick film pastes used in the manufacture of silicon solar cells, and as reducing agent and sources of heat, used in alumina thermic and exothermic applications.
In the present investigation, Aluminium powders were exposed to non-contact Biofield treatment. Both the exposed and unexposed powders were later characterized by various techniques. The average particle size, after a slight initial decrease was found to increase after 80 days of treatment substantially, which suggested the operation of competing mechanisms fracture and sintering (micro welding). The BET surface area monotonically decreased which was consistent with increase in particle size. SEM photographs showed that samples exposed to Biofield after 38 days showed growth in particle size and particles joined at inter and intra particle boundaries. X-ray diffraction of the powder samples indicated both increase and decrease in crystallite size, unit cell volume, change in nuclear charge per unit volume of atom and atomic weight of samples exposed to Biofield even after 106 days. These results indicated that properties of Aluminium powders could be changed even up to atomic level by exposure to Biofield.

The Phenomenon of Zoology via Art

Abraham Tamir

Zoology is the branch of biology that deals with animals and their life, including the study of the structure, physiology, development, and classification of animals. The term is derived from the Ancient Greek word “animal”. It can be broken down into numerous sub-disciplines such as: ornithology (the study of birds), primatology (the study of primates), ichthyology (the study of fish), and entomology (the study of insects). As a whole, zoology encompasses a fascinating and important body of knowledge that enables us to better understand animals, wildlife, our environment and ourselves. It was Aristotle (384-322 B.C.E) who is considered as the “father of zoology”. His contribution to zoology includes vast quantities of information about the variety, structure and behavior of animals, the analysis of the part of living organisms and the beginning of the science of taxonomy. In the ‘History of Animals’ he looked at the physiology of animals, comparing and contrasting the organs and their specific functions. He noted how the same organs varied in different animals and documented how the same organs possessed completely different functions. He related this to the lifestyle and the habitat of the species, pointing out how organs differ according to whether the animal lives on land, flies or is aquatic, and whether the animal breathes air or not. The 1859 publication of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection was a major turning point. Since that time, the study of genetics has become essential in zoological studies.

A Fuzzy Probabilistic Maximum Technique to Optimize an Unconstrained Utility Based Multi Objective Model

Mohammadreza Torkjazi and Hamed Fazlollahtabar

One way to optimize multi objective mathematical models is to employ utility functions for the objectives. Recent studies on utility based multi objective optimization consider only one utility function for each objective. But, in reality it is not reasonable to have a unique utility function corresponding to each objective function. Here, an unconstrained multi objective mathematical model is considered in which several utility functions are associated for each objective. A fuzzy probabilistic approach is incorporated to investigate the uncertainty of the utility functions for each objective. Since these utility functions are uncertain and in fuzzy form, the total utility function of the problem is a fuzzy nonlinear mathematical model. While, there are not any conventional approaches to solve such a model, a defuzzification method to change the total utility function to a crisp nonlinear model is employed. Meanwhile, maximum technique is applied to defuzzify the conditional utility functions. Then, an existing method to optimize the final single objective nonlinear model is adapted. The obtained results show that by changing the utility functions regarding to the dynamism of the environment, the method is still capable to provide the solutions accordingly. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is shown by solving a test problem.
